The Pieces of Time
PLANNER DESIGN With countless tasks, agendas, and chores to do in a finite amount of time, efficiency is the most important aspect of time management. There are two crucial hindrances we must take into consideration when we allocate our precious time to do tasks. The first one is our own personal motivation in completing something on our schedule. There are always instances in our lives when we put off a specific action for a later time. Another hindrance is the effect of society; how other people affect our personal schedules. Both of these hindrances make us less efficient than we strive to be. This is why I have created a practical planner with a focus on satisfaction and motivation. The goal of the planner is to intensify the feeling of satisfaction whenever an user finishes a task they set out on doing by granting him/her the fulfillment of tearing, breaking, or burning the planner. |

My planner is divided into three parts: Tearing, Breaking, and burning. The first part, tearing, comes with a square sheeted planner that outlines different time lengths with different shapes. The idea is for an user to write down a to-do list that takes place in a specific amount of time and allocating them to different slots. When the user finishes a task, he/she can go ahead and tear the part off the main body of the planner to help with focusing on the next step. The second part, breaking, features a planner made out of wood. Like the previous part of the planner, tasks are written on each wood plank and are subsequently broken off when it is completed. The last part, burning, features a planner equipped with a match. The idea is to light a task an user has completed on fire. The task should be something achievable but challenging.
The main goal of my piece is to focus on the ceremonial factor of crossing something off your agenda. With an emphasis on the end goal, it helps users become more focused on completion rather than procrastination. And another way this planner helps with completion of tasks is that it helps the user organize the hierarchical structure of a particular schedule. To express the different nuances of all the tasks that need to be done, I have done research on different types of physical materials to make the planner in, colors to represent the gradual shifts in time, and satisfying actions to elevate the ceremonial feeling we all feel when we finish something we set out to do.
